WANTcast: The Women Against Negative Talk Podcast

Welcome to the WANTcast: The Women Against Talk Podcast — lessons in moving forward fearlessly and spreading the (good) word. In each episode, writer, speaker, coach and WANT founder Katie Horwitch unpacks tips, tools, motivation and inspiration to help you shift your self-talk: the internal narrative you have on loop 24/7 that tells you who you are and who you should be. Dive into topics such as confidence, fear, trust, body image, self-doubt, self-worth, relationships, career, friendships, social issues, and more - and walk away from each episode with actionable steps to shift your narrative from reactive to proactive (as well as inspiration to keep going when the going gets tough). You can't change the world until you change YOUR world, first - and shifting your self-talk is where it all begins. The goal isn't to change who you are - it's to BECOME who you know you're meant to be. New episodes every other Tuesday. Get the show notes + more at womenagainstnegativetalk.com

True love, real love, "the one"... the way people describe love is pretty and aspirational, but ultimately super vague. What does love actually feel like? How do you know it's love and not just old habits or displaced desires? Is love even a noun at all, or is it an action?

In this episode, I talk to partners in life, love, and business, Dr. Carrie Kholi-Murchison and Holley Kholi-Murchison) about:

  • How to truly be in relationship and partnership with someone else....and also honor yourself and your own desires.
  • Re-evaluating and reflecting about the way you relate to love
  • HOW THE HECK do you separate your own self-love from the love you experience from someone else — especially if that person fills many roles in your life?
  • and more!

(this episode is a Best Of The WANTcast rebroadcast — so if you loved it the first time around, listen again to gather even more gems you might have missed!)

  • The call with a friend that served as a metaphor for Katie's experience with STRENGTH
  • Why some of the tangible qualities we choose to go after in our lives are important, but not enough
  • How to turn your focus onto what you CAN'T see vs. what's visible and measurable
  • and more!

Know what you want but struggle to untangle yourself from the feelings of obligation that somehow always seem to get in the way?

Tricia Huffman believes that "should" is a word that is actually able to be nixed from our vocabulary altogether and replaced with something way more powerful and proactive.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Why and how Tricia decided to pay attention to this ONE word on such a granular level
  • How to handle the "positive shoulds" and why Tricia believes there's really no such SHOULD
  • Suggestions for how to nix SHOULD from the heaviest of situations to the lightest
  • The importance of boiling down your message, and how that opened up even more possibility for Tricia as she approached her debut book
  • and more!

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why Katie doesn't consider herself a naturally BRAVE person
  • How we sometimes misuse the word BRAVE, and how it differs from fearlessness
  • Katie's BRAVERY a-ha moment, and how she's defining bravery (and being brave!) in her life moving forward
  • How to reverse-engineer however you hope to be by changing your perspective on yourself
  • Why easy things, like emails, are so damn hard

  • Why the negative self-talk around THIS time of year is especially potent and important to be aware of
  • Why the data around New Years Resolutions (80% of people let them go by February) is about waaaaaaay more than goal-setting strategies and might be a sign of something deeper going on way before New Years Day even hits
  • Why the ends of years can be really hard for some people (including Katie!)
  • Four ways Katie personally navigates her self-talk during this time of year, and what she's seen help others as well

No matter what, whether you celebrate or you don't celebrate, you're probably getting a lot of messages around thankfulness and gratitude right now. In today's special Thursday episode, we're talking how to frame this day and this time of year as something a little bit different than in the past:

  • Why you might feel a sense of burnout, anxiety, or longing the day of an emotion/expression-focused holiday like Thanksgiving or Valentine's Day
  • How to cultivate a gratitude practice in as little as 1-2 minutes without going overboard or being unrealistic
  • Katie's theory on bringing more of a New Year's Eve vibe to the day we're supposed to focus on "giving thanks"

America is more obsessed with fitness than we've ever been...but somehow the unhealthiest we've ever been. How is this so, and how we can break the barriers that Fitness + Wellness Culture tells us we must subscribe to?

Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, the author of FIT NATION, is here to answer these questions and more. For her, fitness is, as her new book describes, "a social justice issue. She argues that the fight for a more equitable exercise culture will be won only by revolutionizing fitness culture at its core, making it truly inclusive for all bodies in a way it has never been."

Today's guest is Kara Cutruzzula: a writer and editor, a playwright, a musical theater lyricist, and the author of both DO IT FOR YOURSELF and DO IT TODAY: An Encouragement Journal. Her long-running must-read newsletter Brass Ring Daily, about work and creativity, has been featured in Lifehacker, Inc., TIME, and Vanity Fair — which called it "a life coach in your inbox".

Today we talk about:

  1. Kara's specific advice for actually "enjoying the process" and "trusting the journey" in your work and life

  2. How/why we diminish our own excitement about projects and milestones, and how to keep some of that joy for yourself

  3. Why Katie sometimes feels like she experiences an existential crisis when she hits her goals, and Kara's way of countering that feeling

  4. Finding your collaborators and champions, how to reach out to people whose work you admire when it feels scary to — plus Kara's exact "in" line — and where the heck to actually find them

  5. Kara's unique take on why hearing NO is sometimes the best thing you can hear

  6. The reason Kara doesn't actually write with a reader in mind, and how it's helped the longevity of Brass Ring Daily

and more!

  2. The email Katie received about yoga pants that gave her an unexpected blast from the past

  3. Trends, trendsetting, and how to mindfully navigate the ups and downs of what's in vs. out

  4. Why you might want to hold the idea of "being yourself" a little more loosely than you are right now...

This time of year can bring up a lot of negative cultural messaging — and therefore negative self-talk — around bodies and working out, and while things are changing for (hopefully) the better, we’ve GOT to know where we’ve come from and how we got here so that we can get to where we truly want to be.

Danielle Friedman is an award-winning journalist and author of the critically acclaimed cultural history of women's fitness Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World.

From the revolutionary and sometimes radical beginnings to the intermingling of diet culture and fitness, to fitness’s place in the feminist movement, to the history of fitness shaping our self-perception — hopefully, this episode can help you get curious about movement’s place in your own life, what’s informed that, and where you’re going from here.

(This is also the season finale — we're taking a short summer vacay. See you in a couple months!)

In this episode, I talk to partners in life, love, and business, Dr. Carrie Kholi-Murchison and Holley Kholi-Murchison (also two of my favorite humans on the planet). These two are each true forces of natures as individuals — so when their powers combine, they're unstoppable: from their work together as co-founders of HOLI. Brands to their upcoming four-week immersive Skillshare course, Build the Next Chapter of Your Career, to the way they champion each other professionally AND personally, they're such strong models of how to truly be in relationship and partnership with someone else....and as you'll hear in this episode, also honor yourself and your own desires.

If you're been re-evaluating and reflecting about the way you relate to love lately, this episode is for you. It's filled with deep truths, big laughs, and — yes, LOTS of love. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Whether it's NEW YEAR NEW YOU season or not, setting goals and benchmarks when you're already feeling burnt out feels unrealistic at best, cruel at worst.

If you're anything like me, you're starting the year feeling more than "meh." You might WANT to set plans into motion, but also might be feeling too defeated to even start.

I'm with you. As someone who actually DOES want to look forward with excitement and possibility (and yes, maybe some goals too), I've begun to ask myself: How the heck do you start setting goals when you feel like you've got so much recent "proof" that reaching your goals isn't really up to you in the first place?

The other day, I asked you what self-talk you’d help shifting. And the word ENOUGH appeared at least 15xs: not SMART enough, not COOL enough, not STRONG enough, not SUCCESSFUL enough...

This is an extra special episode, because it’s a conversation with one of the most extra-special people in my life: mobility expert, personal trainer, yoga teacher, dancer, and one of my dearest friends in the universe, Nicole Sciacca.

Nicole is a WEALTH of information on any and all things having to do with how your body moves - and prides herself on nurturing her client’s sense of self while optimizing their performance, potential, and personal recovery. She’s also a rockstar mother, a former fitness studio owner, a meditation teacher (and devotee), a trainer to A-list celebrities, an eternal optimist, and basically the most loyal friend you’ll ever have.

In this episode we talk about Nicole’s philosophy on doing and being many things in your lifetime (and what that can actually look like), the phrase that helped her navigate the darkest moments of her personal and professional life, how an unexpected instance involving one of her most famous clients led her to instant Instagram celebrity status literally overnight (and how she navigated that), how to rethink movement as your body ages, and WAY more.

Join us this Sunday June 27th at 3:00pm Eastern Time for Nothing But a Number - A Movement + Self Talk workshop to reimagine your relationship with age. In this free 90 minute workshop, you'll dissect your relationship with age and "aging" no matter how old you are. Half intentional movement focused on longevity and joint health, half mindful discussion, walk away with practical tools to help you age powerfully in body and spirit.

If you're feeling particularly...um...tested lately (by people, by work, by life being life), welcome to the club. Because you, along with pretty much everyone else, are in the middle of a transition. And moving forward might feel so hard — or annoying — that you feel like maybe it's not worth the energy to even try.

In this solo episode, we're diving into how to move forward when it's really tempting not to (and why those temptations feel so freaking tempting. I hear you!)...and how to use what's commonly seen as a "negative" feeling to your full advantage.
