WANTcast: The Women Against Negative Talk Podcast

Welcome to the WANTcast: The Women Against Talk Podcast — lessons in moving forward fearlessly and spreading the (good) word. In each episode, writer, speaker, coach and WANT founder Katie Horwitch unpacks tips, tools, motivation and inspiration to help you shift your self-talk: the internal narrative you have on loop 24/7 that tells you who you are and who you should be. Dive into topics such as confidence, fear, trust, body image, self-doubt, self-worth, relationships, career, friendships, social issues, and more - and walk away from each episode with actionable steps to shift your narrative from reactive to proactive (as well as inspiration to keep going when the going gets tough). You can't change the world until you change YOUR world, first - and shifting your self-talk is where it all begins. The goal isn't to change who you are - it's to BECOME who you know you're meant to be. New episodes every other Tuesday. Get the show notes + more at womenagainstnegativetalk.com

"Wellness" is 4.4-trillion-dollar global industry — but in many cases, it's not actually making us more well. In a society that's become increasingly distrustful of conventional medicine, how can we decipher what's fact vs. fiction, steer clear of The Wellness Trap, and reimagine what well-being CAN be?

Today's guest is the phenomenal Christy Harrison, a journalist, registered dietitian, and certified intuitive eating counselor. She’s the author of the brand new book The Wellness Trap: Break Free from Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Dubious Diagnoses and Find Your True Well-Being  and the amazing book Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating. She’s also the producer and host of two podcasts, Rethinking Wellness and Food Psych, which have helped tens of thousands of listeners around the world think critically about diet and wellness culture and develop more peaceful relationships with food.

Something really important to know: if you’re thinking this is going to be an episode totally bashing wellness — that is NOT what this is. Christy is encouraging us to expand our critical thinking skills and hold multiple truths at once. This is 100% a WANTcast episode for people who are wellness devotees, for people who can't stand (or at least are super skeptical of) what’s become of the wellness world, and for all the people in the middle. If you listen to one pod this week, make it this one.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT:

  • The difference between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation
  • How social media's algorithms can lead you down more extreme, risky paths without even intending to
  • Why the wellness industry is so enticing and, at times, can seem way more "trustworthy" to us (even if that's not always the case)
  • How to intentionally and mindfully make space for wellness practices and alternatives you love and find useful
  • How to determine what's helpful, what's harmful, and what deserves a second look
  • What to say to a friend who might have fallen down a dangerous rabbit hole
  • How you can reinvision what "living well" actually means
  • and SO MUCH MORE.

ABOUT THE WELLNESS TRAP:

The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science. Weaving together history, memoir, reporting, and practical advice, Harrison illuminates the harms of wellness culture while re-imagining our society’s relationship with well-being.

This time of year can bring up a lot of negative cultural messaging — and therefore negative self-talk — around bodies and working out, and while things are changing for (hopefully) the better, we’ve GOT to know where we’ve come from and how we got here so that we can get to where we truly want to be.

Danielle Friedman is an award-winning journalist and author of the critically acclaimed cultural history of women's fitness Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World.

From the revolutionary and sometimes radical beginnings to the intermingling of diet culture and fitness, to fitness’s place in the feminist movement, to the history of fitness shaping our self-perception — hopefully, this episode can help you get curious about movement’s place in your own life, what’s informed that, and where you’re going from here.

(This is also the season finale — we're taking a short summer vacay. See you in a couple months!)

Building confidence or "being more confident" is high on a lot of people's to-do list...so why is it so hard to actually DO the damn thing?

In this episode, we break down what confidence is and isn't, why "fake it 'till you make it" might or might not work for you, and tangible ways to keep yourself accountable on your journey toward "more" confidence...whatever that looks like for YOU.

Burnout and overwhelm are timeless and can show up any time, anywhere, around anything. Kelsey Patel is one of Hollywood’s leading wellness and reiki experts, as well as newly published author of Burning Bright: Rituals, Reiki, and Self-Care to Heal Burnout, Anxiety, and Stress. She is not only a sought-after spiritual empowerment coach, yoga teacher, reiki healer and meditation teacher, but also a multi-faceted entrepreneur and inspirational speaker. She is the creator and founder of Magik Vibes, a soul-enhancing lifestyle brand, which is also the name of her wellness-meets-spirituality podcast. Patel is an expert on burnout and conscious capitalism, facilitating workshops and giving keynote addresses for organizations such as Free People, Aerie, GOOP, and more.

Kelsey’s first book, Burning Bright is a path out of pain, anxiety, burnout, and overwhelm, and shows you the tools you already possess to heal through unique rituals, reiki, and self-care practices.

This episode was recorded a few months back, specifically to address coronavirus-related burnout and overwhelm, and how to transition from what we've been calling the 'For-Now Normal' to what will eventually be our new normal. Kelsey shares so many ACCESSIBLE tools we can use to, as the artist Bansky once said, “Learn to REST, not QUIT.” Listen for more on this in the episode's intro.

Additional listening centered specifically around burnout while doing anti-racism work, and leaning into wellness as a person of color:

“Empowerment” is trending, but somehow we’re still here telling our negative self talk it can go F off. Calling your critical inner voice a mean name might work for some people - but it's never worked for me.

Here's why this tactic doesn't work for so many of us...and some ways (15, to be exact) you can reframe your negative self-talk when you start to spiral.

Patricia Moreno is the trailblazing founder of spiritual fitness, leading a conversation about living a full potential life and the importance of each and every one of us making a vow to wake up and be a positive and effective part of the raising of the consciousness of the planet.

After years of training and studying with personal optimization experts, mindset scholars and spiritual teachers, Patricia Moreno created her own practices to integrate spiritual fitness into the lives of hundreds of thousands worldwide. Before anyone was saying affirmations on a spin bike, Patricia Moreno was pairing mindfulness with physicality with intenSati, her signature movement method that has been packing classes and changing lives for over 15 years.

In this episode, we talk about Patricia's journey from a girl whose parents put her on a diet at eight years old, to the thought leader and powerhouse she is today. We talk about fat-phobia, and the way our culture (and the fitness industry!) keeps us limiting ourselves without us even KNOWING. We talk about keeping secrets and hitting rock bottom when it looks like you're at the top. We talk about how to achieve the changes you're after, and how physicality is only part of making those changes. We talk about where we are, where we've been, and where we MUST go if we want to move forward fearlessly in our lives. (This is a rebroadcast of one of our favorite WANTcast interviews of all-time from 2018.)

It's the most-used WANT exercise for a reason: it's unexpected but it WORKS. Going through a major life transition, had a stressful month, or just wanting to take preventative measures to ensure you don't have a *complete* meltdown when it all eventually feels like too much? You might be in need of a Planned Freak-Out.

In this episode we'll talk about the origin story of the PFO, why it's so different than any other goal-setting or self-reflection exercise you've done, and we'll break down how to set yourself up for success in your own structured breakdown.

Doesn’t it sound sexy to say what you’re “leaving behind” in the new year? To make a list of what you’re going to stop doing in 2020? But it’s not that simple. 80% of us fall short on our goals in just a few weeks and use that hiccup to completely lose momentum.

In this episode, we'll dive into two simple but deceptively impactful exercises to do at the start of the new decade: one to help you reflect on how far you've come (and make peace with former aspects of yourself you might be ashamed of), and one to help usher you into a brand new year (or ten).

You've probably heard the phrase "consistency is key" - in business, in marketing, in fitness, in habit-forming. Consistency is basically the golden ticket to any and all kinds of success. Or is it?

This episode breaks down an alternate view on consistency, and is for those people who feel defeated when things aren't going according to plan or they're thrown off their game (we reference seasonality - but this is an episode to bookmark no matter what time of year).

We live in a culture of over-apologizers. But sometimes you screw up – majorly. Maybe it’s a missed deadline. Maybe you forget about important plans. Maybe you sleep through your alarm clock or lose a pair of borrowed earrings or think it’s Sunday when it’s actually Monday. Or maybe it’s worse.

Whatever the case, you’re deeply sorry – yet don’t know how to accurately portray how sincere you really are without coming across as flippant, disingenuous, or just another sorry-monster. Here’s what I’ve learned when it comes to how to say sorry, for those of us who get hit the deepest by our own mistakes and want to make our apologies last longer than just five little letters.

Without Summer vacations and required reading, it can be hard as an adult to draw the line between where Summer ends and Fall begins. Because although we’d love to have an endless summer…and although the first day of Autumn isn’t technically until September 23rd…we can all feel a shift happen the moment Labor Day weekend comes to a close. It’s “back to the grind” – even though most of us have been grinding all year long.

This timely Season Premiere of the WANTcast is here to help you make the most of this time, right here and now. Because while January usually gets all the attention when it comes to resolutions, I’d like to argue that September holds just as much promise as the 01/01 mark.

In today's SEASON FINALE, two listeners ask about finding confidence and self-love again, and finding positive communities when all people want to do is bond over negativity. There's a common theme in the answers to both of these - and it has to do with how you become the first-best version of yourself instead of the second-best version of someone else.

**This is the SEASON FINALE of Season 4! Thank you so much for helping the WANTcast grow and evolve over the last almost-four years. We'll be taking a break over the summer and coming back stronger than ever in August with Season Five.**

What happens when you feel a "calling" to change things up...but everything is going just fine? What if you're doubting a choice is the right one to make...but you don't have proof as to why?

Jennifer Pastiloff’s debut memoir, On Being Human, is set to release on June 4th, and it’s already getting massively well-deserved buzz. Centered around the touchstone stories Jen tells in her popular workshops, On Being Human is the story of how a starved person grew into the exuberant woman she was meant to be all along by battling the demons within and winning. It’s about how years of waitressing taught her to seek out unexpected beauty, how deafness taught her to listen fiercely, how being vulnerable allowed her to find love, and how imperfections can lead to a life full of wild happiness. The world is about to watch her explode. And so, before they do, I wanted to give you all a chance to meet her, so you too can say you knew her “way back when.”

In this episode we talk about navigating trauma and grief (especially from unexpected death), feeling worth and building confidence when all you feel is worthless, and shifting from a mindset of expecting to be disappointed to expecting to be delighted.

Getting a "gut feeling" can be your intuition kicking in...or a case of being triggered. And if you're a naturally super-intuitive and "tuned in" person, it can be even more difficult than normal to tell the difference. Make sure you know which is which before you make a choice you might not feel so great about after the fact.
